The Basics of Dental Inlays

Dental Inlays are fillings that are larger than typical fillings but smaller than crowns. They are usually made from gold alloy and are placed into the missing portion of the decayed or damaged tooth after being matched to the exact shape in a lab. Inlays are typically indicated if more than half of the tooth is damaged or decayed.

Gold alloys do not tarnish or wear, so they can be advantageous compared to traditional filling materials. The main downside is that since they must be made in a lab to fit the missing portion of the tooth, they cannot be applied the same day. This is called an indirect filling procedure.
